Incidents in LHC ...forcing restart in 2009

Sorry for being late to update you about the incidents which occured within a week of the LHC's inauguration. As the superconducting magnet lost about a tonne of liquid helium into the tunnel. As a result massive Quenches occurred around sector 3- 4 . it happened when one of the superconducting magnet which was kept cooled down by liquid helium- leaked. This causeed rise of the temperature. It was bad because it may result an abrupt change of proton beam's paths..the amount of lost superfluid helium is said to be about 1% of the total amount used in LHC.. After this incident on 19th September, the LHC was forced to shut down.

Investigation showed lately that a faulty electrical connection between 2 magnets was the cause of this. And for which the connection melted as of high current...“This incident was unforeseen,” said CERN Director GeneralRobert Aymar, “but I am now confident that we can make the necessary repairs, ensure that a similar incident can not happen in the future and move forward to achieving our research objectives.”..

This is a major disappointment for the LHC after a trail of events of opening on just a few days back, and this forced to reschedule the operation. It is now expected to restart in early spring in 2009.

“Coming immediately after the very successful start of LHC operation on 10 September, this is undoubtedly a psychological blow,” said CERN Director General Robert Aymar. “Nevertheless, the success of the LHC’s first operation with beam is testimony to years of painstaking preparation and the skill of the teams involved in building and running CERN’s accelerator complex. I have no doubt that we will overcome this setback with the same degree of rigour and application.”

This LHC is very complexly designed and very unique. it is necessary to fully understand why and how the incident happened and making sure of it will never happen again.. this is why the restart may be delayed.

“The LHC is a very complex instrument, huge in scale and pushing technological limits in many areas,” said Peter Limon, who worked on commissioning the world’s first large-scale superconducting accelerator, the Tevatron at Fermilab in the USA. “Events occur from time to time that temporarily stop operations, for shorter or longer periods, especially during the early phases.”

Finally, We are pleased to know that its not that a major incident and might not take too long to reopen... the billion dollar project may show us new edge of human knowledge. proving the predicted theories and looking for the evidences to study..

There are particles which are massive and also there are particles which are massless. According to the theory of relativity the massless particles are the only particles who can gain the ultimate speed. the speed of light. like photons. they always travel at a speed c. but the massive particles dont. Now, They also travel but the speed is rather slower. As they get more massive, the speed is slower. the very question, is how do they get mass. what causes them being massive?

Lewis Hamilton

I am writing on formula one after a long gap. Actually so many things are happening in F1 that i couldn't stop myself from writing.. Lewis Hamilton's F1 Car (McLaren Mercedes)
Let me start with last year's story. L Hamilton of G Britain. a very young promising driver is appointed in Mclaren's team. Its was after kimi Raikkonen left to Ferrari and also JP Montoya who joined the NASCAR. The eye was really on Mclaren becaause it was F alonso, who joined Mclaaren team leaving the Renault and looking for a brighter future... as a team mate, Hamilton is starting to show up side by side with Alonso. he was a rookie driver but the way he come in front was astonishing! well, not exactly astonishing to those who used to watch formula 3 champ. coz he came out from that. However, Hamilton shows his power and his ability to win races and even amazingly the ability to be a rookie champion. the dream lasted till to the last Brazilian Grand prix.

The main drama was not only that the rookie was about to take away the championship from that F. Alonso, but also Alonso made more news! He was involved with the spying on Ferraari's car with few other. All he wanted a better car than Hamilton's. Why? he even argued with the Mclaaren team boss Ron Dennis and threatened him. This was the story of the late Q3 of 2007. and what was the result? Well team boss informed the FIA and thus they were fined millions of dollars! as well as all their points were swept up. and making the Ferrari which was not performing good in '07, the Constructors champion. Alonso had a contract signed with Mclaren for about three years, but seems a very bitter relation with the team boss Ron Dennis making it difficlt for him to stay, and also it was a very uncomfortable situation with the team as well. as both Hamilton and Alonso were given Identical cars and none was preferred. For the spying - he caused millions of dollar pay, and also '0' points for the Mclaren Constructor at the end of the season 2007. Though Hamilton could give the only good thing for Mclaren, as a rookie champion-who was appointed by Mclaren team boss Ron Dennis, and It could be a great pay-off for Hamilton. But it was all luck for them, kimi Raikkonen who joined Ferrari team leaving Mclaren that year, became the champion staying just 1 pont ahead of Lwis Hamilton!! at the end of the season..
For when 2008 season started, things have changed a lot. Ferrari had a new car, a new better aerodynamics and engine as well and better than 2007's car. they got stable team mates. F Massa and k. Raikkonen. and Alonso had no choice but joined again the Renault team. Hekki Kovaleinnen joined with Lwis Hamilton. and who else could be threat for team Mclaren?? well, It is BMW!

Up till now, and in the last race of Canadian Grand prix, Robert Kubica of BMW, won the race not ony that, his team mate Nick Heidfeld earning points too for the Team!
The Season hasnt finished yet, but lots of Drama still is happening. The FIA presiden Max Mosley is going through tough time as he was involved with some scandal! Max Mosley( FIA Presiden: under pressure to resign)
and many members wants this FIA president to step down from his position. But he argued and still holding the position speaking of the Incident as his personal matter and not to relate with his job. well what was the Scandal?? well.. it was that a British Tabloid published him who seemed to take part in a Nazi-themed orgy with prostitutes!!

Anyway, Lots of Drama is still spinning. Will write about it later. by this time, dont miss the coming France Grand prix, a real challenge for all front line drivers! Cheers!

Mini black hole in LHC!... delaying the grand opening...

LHC (the Large Hadron Collider) was planned to open long ago.. but due to some technical problems its opening was shifted to this year 2008. But seems luck still doesnt favor. A new legal problem arose as few persons filed a lawsuit in long distant place -Hawaii!..

Walter L. Wagner and Luis Sancho who are these people filed this as they believe that there is a threat of creating a mini black hole in super collider LHC, which will eat up the whole earth. so there it is.. that is the reason for which its delaying. LHC is now checking the environmental safety issue over again just making sure everything is just allright.

But who are these 2 people who raise the safety issue of LHC? and calling it unsafe which may turn the whole earth into a microscopic black hole resulting a lump of dense matter? the words become so fictional.!! indeed! Mr Wagner is and US citizen and a botanist!! and he's also a lawyer( hmm! that makes sense!) he used to be a nuclear safety officer. and Mr. Sancho is a Spaniard! ( ohh damn! i hate f. alonso the F1 driver and also r. nadal the tennis player as well - they both are Spaniard!) and he described himself as' an author and researcher on time theory!!!' (hmmm! may be a sci-fi writer)- ( New York Times)

The Aharonov -Bohm effect

For long since the electrodynamics has developed, we are familiar with the Vector Potential. The Vector potential was for thought to be just a tool to develop the Maxwell’s equations. It was ignored in the macroscopic physical world. But there is a deep underlying physical significance of it in quantum mechanics, and also the deep connection of topology with physics (This experiment can be considered as the simplest example)

As we know any vector can be written as a curl of another vector, so the magnetic field vector B can be written as B=curl A. this A is called the vector potential.

Apparently A doesn’t look very much physically significant. But it is. And it was first recognized by 2 Physicists Aharonov and Bohm. In the early 60s Aharonov and Bohm published papers and describing an effect due to a certain experimental set up of old double slit experiment. What we now know as Aharonov-Bohm effect.

In this experimental set up, think of a long solenoid is set just after the double slit. (Originally a very special kind of magnetic field is used.

[as its difficult to place a long solenoid in that tiny space] Under certain circumstances iron crystals can grow in the form of very long, microscopically thin filaments called whiskers. These whiskers can be magnetized and they then act like very tiny solenoids: Hence a purely static magnetic field concentrated in the whiskers (the field outside is extremely small and can be neglected)) So there is no magnetic and electric field present at the gap between the slits and the screen (outside the whiskers). The observed phenomenon was a shift of interference pattern just due to the placement of that solenoid. So, what could affect the charged particles on its path if no field was present?

Classically we can’t find the whisker unless we hit it by an electron, but quantum mechanically it can be detected through the electrons passing by it. This is very strange as we have set the B and E zero... Then what else could affect these particles? As they cant even go through the regions where there is non- zero (inside the solenoid) magnetic field? And there we can bring the term the vector Potential A. The only remaining term exists outside the solenoid is A. Which might affect the electrons and thus we have the shift of interference pattern. So we have no chance to think this Vector Potential Physically insignificant any more.

In the next post, we'll try to dig a little more a little calculations ...and we'll see how topology connects to physics in this very simple experiment (consider the solenoid as a hole in a flat sheet which is not simply connected) of electromagnetism at quantum level.

In my last post i categorized the history before and after the WW-II. It may be a question why is this? Actually, while the war was on, a number of physicists were involved with the war related stuff... (Research on bomb and high tech stuff). So in those days, many physicists were in connection with many government officials and they could manage convincing for funding of setting up accelerators. So in those days, after few decades, the budget was made and the funds were available for the research so, that was a point, I made. And that was a time when the particles were being discovering...and the accelerators were leading the theory....but lately in the 80s the thery developed so far that we needed powerful, high energy accelerator.

The Superconducting Super Collider

But now a day, after the cold war. The soviet broke up. And USA brought many Russian brains to their country, and the budget was cut and accelerators were run out of fund. Finally SSC (Superconducting Super Collider) was terminated. So, like this, (this was due to gulf war) many other projects were either terminated or cut the budgets...or they put pressure to earn money in their own way...So, it was hopeless...

The Large Hadron Collider

But recently the CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) is setting up the LHC (large Hadron Collider) which is almost done. And expected to be in operation in May 2008. However, if the SSC were in operation that could produce 20 TeV amount of energy. But this LHC will produce 14 TeV... But yet this is a hope to have something higher.

Before start to talk about string theory let me tell you the brief history of inward journey of the physicists. Where to begin? Rutherford? Or Bohr? Or the Modern quantum mechanics of Schrödinger, Heisenberg, De Broglie? Or the Mr Dirac? Well everyone of them studied hard and involved themselves to learn the physics of tinier to tinier particles. The quantum level learnt by 1920 seem so bizarre. That it really doesn’t seem to anybody a pure physics, rather a physical description of subatomic level. When Dirac gave his equation he didn’t even know he produced or predicted a particle –positron. However at that time it was so strange o have a particle which is similar to electron but positively charged. So it seem to him as a mathematical solution. But later in just 2 years experimentalists could find the positron, not only that but Pauli another physicist guessed the existence of neutrino. Though he earlier didn’t boldly said that. He explained the beta decay and predicted it. However later a marvelous theory by H. Yukawa introduced another subatomic force, which wasn’t previously, recognized….is the strong force. Though the theory developed by the journey, but still the credit goes to Yukawa.

Due to the world war II the research stopped and later after the war, the golden age of particle physics started…(sometimes I feel, unless the US never used nuclear weapon to Japan- the particle physics would not come to this far so fast!) Mr R.P Feynman himself was engaged himself in such a project, and Hans Bethe himself too. This Feynman was the man who developed quantum electrodynamics a renormalized theory yet so powerful. However after the WW-II the US government funded largely to the physicists to their high energy research. They started to set up accelerators to study particles.. by that time in 1960s experimentalists found so many particles but could not arrange them in order, there have been few propositions. But none seem enough until Mr Murray Gell-Mann . Murray Gell-Mann (independtly Kazuhiko Nishijima, Yuval Ne'eman) ordered the particles found by 1960s. Named very strangely ‘the eightfold way’. They by introducing quark model seems like finished the job. But there have been problems with that too. In those years accelerators were busy producing particles. There have been explosion of particles. [And the Greek alphabet was inadequate naming them. ;)] in the mean time, Sheldon Glashow, Abdus Salam and Steven Weinberg Unified the electromagnetism with the weak interaction. And which is known as electro-weak interaction. It was developed to describe the beta decay. So far, I have talked about 3 fundamental interactions.

1. Electromagnetism (the interaction for charged particles)
2. The weak interaction (for beta decay)
3. The strong interaction. (for strongly bound hadrons-quarks)

Remember, I haven’t talked much about the history as it proceeded. Electromagnetism was unified long ago. And the weak interaction was unified with the electromagnetism. And the role player of successful quantum theory of electromagnetism was Dirac and later Feynman. This Quantum Electrodynamics is very logical but a price had to pay for this. Even Mr. Dirac wasn’t happy with the renormalized theory. Well, let me introduce this way. The electron has its own field and due to the inverse square law the self energy diverges as we go farther inside. So, the technique was-cut it to a finite level, give this a finite size. So that we’ll stop calculating down to that scale. So we are making the electron a point like, and also defining the interaction. Again, if you are familiar with Feynman diagram, you can check that the electrons interaction was made a simple just a within a simple vertex. So, even though there are wide possibilities and also ignoring the vacuum polarization. So, there it is. Renormalization is what made QED powerful and also not very accurate or general physical view. And there it started. Though, after the success of QED, QCD develops with even more complicacy. QCD is quantum chromo dynamics. And it’s also a renormalized theory. So quantum field theory is facing a problem this. Again, the standard model introduced by the particle physicists (almost similar to the one we use to categorize atoms in periodic table) is very strange number one, it is based on renormalized theory and number two, where is the gravity?? Or graviton- the quantum of gravitational interaction? In GUT (Grand Unified Theories) the gravity is simply ignored or not introduced and seems like it’s irrelevant. But how come our everyday known interaction is absent?

This is where the String Theory comes to help with their views. The standard model & GUT have many other problems like there have been 3 generations of quarks and leptons but why? There where The String Theory comes.

### The book that has a total history and a vast detail background is named "Inward Bound of Matter and Forces in the Physical World" by Abraham Pais. He started telling the story from 1900 when the X- ray was just discovered. Finishes his book with the modern time physics of 80s.... i cant avoid quoting a paragraph from his book...

" The most recent phase in the development of supersymmetry is super string theory, a development that once again started its roots in the seventies. Here the fundamental operator fields are no longer functions of a point that tracks a world line in space-time, but of a one-dimensional structure, a string, that sweeps a world sheet. Theories of this kind can be formulated consistently only on the manifolds with more than three spatial dimensions (there is always only one a time dimension). By means of a spontaneous symmetry-breaking mechanism ('compactification') the extra dimensions are supposed to shrivel to extremely tiny dimensions. Theories of this kind are generalizations of the Kaluza-Klein theory, also conceived in its day as a unified field theory. It appears that this approach may lead to a consistent renormalizable theory of gravitation, that, in fact, it is a candidate for TUT, the totally unified theory of all forces, the marriage between GUT and gravity. these theories contain super-high mass excitations, of the order of the Plank mass, necessary for consistency but negligible on the mass levels of the physics of known particles. In the limit where these supermass are dropped, string theory reduces to point theory. Intis picture even the GUT scale appears as a medium energy scale"

How i come to know about The String Theory...

The Physics today has become so much complicated and challenging. The fact is there are lots of varieties of study of Physics. I am not going to talk about them now; this post is on how I come to know about the theory called 'String Theory'...

I came to know about String Theory while I was just a kid. Like I was a student of class 7. I was very much interested in 'science' rather than 'physics' in particular. one Friday The Daily Ittefaque published a stunning news in science page- it was quite like ' the cosmic symphony is finally found in strings' I was amazed to find a picture of a violin above the article and also the writer was trying to show something deep connection between the violin strings and a theory called String Theory. But introducing string theory was not the subject of the article but rather it was about the revolutionary unification of string theory. (It was done by a physicist- now I know him as Ed. Witten) I had no idea about what actually it was about...

After few years, like when I was studying in class 10(SSC). and was aware of Physics and Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, and many other topics...one evening I listened to a BBC Radio interview of a person who newly published his book on string theory...who briefly gave the idea of strings n stuff... (later I bought his book, and even we showed the documentary he made on string theory in a workshop-he was Brian Greene) from that time up till now, that stuck into my mind and still struggling to grasp what’s actually is happening..In my college life I could use internet, and I told my brother to download/print the whole official site of string theory. And so he did....so that made me clear what actually do string theory say in a very rough language.

When I got admitted into Physics in Dhaka University, I found a bundle of books on String Theory and lots of many other books on fundamental topic of Physics in our Seminar Library. (I must thank MR. MAHBUB MAJUMDAR who donated so many recent books on String Theory and many other advanced topics needed to study this. he's the one who is a trainer of Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad and who worked on cosmic strings and has a cool profile - I’ll talk about him later)..so, at this stage I seemed like I have got everything needed....and since then I have been trying to study what actually string theory is saying and what’s the physics...I will be posting on these and also why do we care to learn this & what’s the ultimate target of studying it....and why the term 'The Theory Of Everything' (TOE in short) is often used for string theory etc..

i invited my friends to visit my blog recently. one of them asked me if this is a news blog of f1!!!! well, after that i find it it has already become a news blog of f1.... earlier i posted lyrics, song, and many other stuff...and also one who checks the links i have given below are physics related.....so what is this blog all about?? my sayings-thoughts? f1 stuff? weired stuffr? lyrics??

i then decided that from now on, i'm nt gonna post only on f1 news but also my field of interest the physics....in near future i'll be posting on something related to physics and mathematics....hope u'll not feel bored.,......

the matter that is a fact is that, this was the last f1 grand prix on the french track...and as almost evry other fan, i was expecting the race was a hamiltonian race....but raikkonnen starting from the 3rd position.....won the race!!!

but stilll alonso cant get out from his bad luck and hamilton is holding his lead over alonso...

Hamilton's Era Starts... at US Grand Prix!!!

The Canadian Grand Prix was not that good for F. Alonso. He faced difficulties as well as penalties but what about US grand prix...?? Hamilton the new 22yr old face from england showed his performance in the US track. He made pole position in the saturday qulifying laps and then he started from p1 till to the end he raced like he's so confident and alonso had found only couple of chances to overtake hamilton. But its hamilton's genius performance that he could not do it..... he seemed very much delighted after the race....no one since from the 195os has ever finished p1 in two consecutive races in his debut career.... so in that sense he's going to be the next SOME GUY to look at after Michael Shumacher......yeah...keep an eye on him.....

Massa finishes the race!

Lewis Hamilton, a black man from Great Britain sees his second place and the ferarri once again feels the victory in bahrain Grand prix, following hamilton, raikkonen struggled to cross him, and finishes his race to become the third driver of the race..

Lewis hamilton now on his 3rd race and he ade a history that none on his debut career finishes podium position, in the entire f1 history, so- he is being thought a good driver on the up coming years!!

.....মন্দিরের বেদী??!!.....

গহীণ জঙ্গলের মধ্যে একটা মন্দির। সেই মন্দিরের ভিতর একটা বেদী। বেদীর উপর শুয়ে আছে একটা মাদী গাধী। চার পা চারদিকে চ্যাগানো। কাৎরাচ্ছে সে। পাশেই মেঝের উপর রোদে শুয়ে আছে প্রকান্ড এক বাঘ।

শিকারী বাঘকে শুধালো, "বাঘ মামা, ঘটনা কি?"

বাঘ আড়মোরা ভেঙে প্রকান্ড এক হাই তুলে বললো,"আর বলো না ভাইগ্না, চলছিলাম আমি নিজের খেয়ালে, এই মন্দিরের সামনে দেখা হলো এই গাধীর সাথে।"

শিকারী শুধায়, "তারপর?..."

বাঘ একটা বিড়ি ধরায়। বলে, "....এসব কাজের পর ধুমপান করতেই ভালো লাগে। তোমার কাছে কি মুড়ি হবে?"

শিকারী কোঁচড় থেকে একটু মুড়ি বার করে দেয় বাঘকে। বাঘ দুই গাল মুড়ি খেয়ে বলে, " তারপর হলো কী.....আমি নিজের পরিচয় দিলাম। বললাম যে আমি বাঘ । গাধী বিশ্বাস করে না। বলে কি-তুমি তো আন্ডারডগ!! টাইগার তো হলো আমার গাধাটা।.."

শিকারী বলে, "..বলে কী??"

বাঘ বলে," তুমিই বলো ভইগ্না, এইসব শুনে কী পোষায়?"

শিকারী বলে, "তারপর?..."

বাঘ বলে," তারপর আর কী, কানে ধরে নিয়ে এলাম মন্দিরের ভেতরে, বেদী'র উপর ফেলে, ঠ্যাং দুটো নিজের কাঁধে তুলে নিয়ে , তারপর যা হবার হল।"

শিকারী ঘাবড়ে গিয়ে বলে, " ওটা আবার কোন স্টাইল? মিশনারি? না ডগি??"

বাঘ বিড়ির ধোঁয়া ছাড়তে ছাড়তে বলে, "ওটা হল গিয়ে আন্ডারডগি স্টাইল............."

...গাধীটা ডুকরে উঠে নেপথ্যে......

i have come to notice lately that ppl want to talk...of themselves....like i want to talk and i want others to listen to me......its very strange....i wonder the new culture is developing to let ppl make their own page, own profile, own stuff own newsletter....com on,....it seems its a kinda entertainment to read other's story as well as to let ppl listen to his her own stories.......

what is this all about??? i have been in Orkut for some time, have been using hi5 and watching it becoming a monster by theze yrs...and like hi5 there are plenty now a days...multiply, tagged, blogs yahoo 360, myspace.....what the .....what is this....u see again while i was watchin Tv i come to know desimartini.com, rediff stuff, and saadi.com, jivansaathi.com all are of same type......

this cyber space is becoming very strange to me...its getting more handy as well as we r at the same time dividing our own brain into pieces......as i didnt have so many stuff to think about in my childhood, and now the teenagers are using this net, mobile and they cant concentrate their own stuff!!!!!!! god bless u all!!dont know who cares to read my stuff!! leave me a comment if u feel the same or u r against me....

hey people...let me introduce myself first.
i am sagar from dhaka, bangladesh. i am studying physics in the dhaka university. i have a great interest in the fundamental particles and their interections.and later on the fascinating world of string theory! i still to grasp many things just to reach quantum field theory..but hopefully it'll be okay by the middle of next year.

i have come to know string theory is now a subject of undergrad study of MIT. as the book 'first course in string theory' is published..so we can start the physics from there anyway...as i also know that we need a lot of mathematics for tht to.but anyway..let me check and update my thoughts regularly...
